Young Witness Dies After Testifying Against Tony Humby
A teenager who prompted the investigation into alleged predators Tony Humby and Bruce Escott has died, a mother says.

In late 2022, a young man from St. John’s testified that 65‑year‑old Tony Humby had sexually abused and exploited teenagers at a trailer on Hussey Drive near the airport. His statements, later subpoenaed, led to the arrest of Humby and former firefighter Bruce Escott in April 2023. Humby faces 88 charges, including 71 current counts tied to 10 complainants, while Escott was convicted of seven offences and sentenced to 13 years. The witness, who had been in a group home since age 12, died of a drug overdose the day after his court testimony, according to his mother, who describes him as a gentle soul who put his life on the line for justice. The case continues in St. John’s and draws national attention.
