Xabi Alonso Leaves Real Madrid by Mutual Consent
Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso exits Real Madrid by mutual consent after 28 matches.

On 12 January 2026, Real Madrid announced the mutual departure of coach Xabi Alonso after 28 league and cup matches. The former Liverpool midfielder signed a three‑year contract in May 2025 when he succeeded Carlo Ancelotti, who moved to coach Brazil. Alonso took over in the summer of 2025 following his 2024 Bundesliga title win with Bayer Leverkusen. At the time of his exit, Real sat second in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona, and had been knocked out in the Spanish Super Cup and in the Champions League group stage by Liverpool and Manchester City. He is being replaced by former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa, currently in charge of Real Madrid’s B side since June 2025.
