Woman who killed son should be able to see her other children, lawyer says
Lawyer argues woman found not criminally responsible for killing her infant should be allowed contact with her other children.

A 26-year-old woman from Wasagamack First Nation, Manitoba, who killed her one-year-old son during a psychotic episode in 2024, should be allowed to see her other children while detained in a mental health hospital, her lawyer argues. The Criminal Code Review Board of Manitoba is reviewing conditions for her release after she was found not criminally responsible due to schizophrenia. The woman believed Child and Family Services was holding her family hostage and that God wanted her to kill the child to protect him. Her treatment team recommends continued hospital detention at Health Sciences Centre's PX3 forensic unit, where she has been since Dec. 15. Psychiatrist Dr. Amir Shamlou testified she presents low to moderate risk of reoffending, no longer experiences delusions about CFS, and is responsive to treatment. The Crown requested restrictions on contact with her children, citing safety concerns, while lawyer Carley Mahoney argues contact would aid her recovery. The board is expected to deliver a decision this week.
