Winter storms hammer Eastern Canada, as rain and flooding hits B.C.'s North Coast

Winter storms continue to impact Canada on December 30, 2025. Eastern Canada faces hazardous conditions after freezing rain and snow affected Ontario and Quebec, with tens of thousands losing power. Environment Canada maintains yellow and orange weather warnings across eastern Ontario to the Atlantic region, forecasting additional snow and strong winds. In Quebec, Montreal recorded 100 911 calls per hour due to icy roads overnight, with temperatures expected to drop to -13°C feeling like -24°C. Meanwhile, British Columbia's North Coast and Haida Gwaii face severe flooding from an atmospheric river system, with Highway 16 washed out, cutting off critical north-south connections. The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued a flood watch, warning rivers could reach or exceed bank levels. Air Canada reports ongoing flight disruptions in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto airports.
