On Sunday night 18 January 2026 a dual‑train high‑speed derailment happened near Adamuz in Andalusia. The 6189 Iryo service from Málaga to Madrid, carrying about 300 passengers, left Córdoba at 7:30 pm and derailed at 7:45 pm local time, jumping onto the opposite track. It collided with a Renfe train heading to Huelva that carried roughly 200 passengers. The trains were travelling 130 mph and 127 mph respectively. Official counts now list 39 fatalities and 170 injuries; 122 patients treated at the scene, 48 still hospitalized, including five minors, one of whom is in intensive care. Investigations by Spanish transport and interior ministries are examining railwork and rolling‑stock defects.
