What we know about deadly New Year's fire at Swiss ski resort

A fire in the early hours of New Year's Day at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has left dozens dead and around 100 injured. The blaze broke out around 1:30am local time on January 1, 2026, during New Year's Eve celebrations. Swiss authorities say dozens are presumed dead, with Italy's foreign ministry reporting at least 40 fatalities to them. Most of the injured are seriously hurt, filling the local hospital's ICU and requiring transfers to facilities across Switzerland. Emergency response included 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances. The cause remains unknown, though early reports suggest it may have started from pyrotechnics or birthday candles igniting wooden ceiling materials. Swiss prosecutors have ruled out terrorism and opened a full investigation into the fire at the popular Alpine ski resort near the Matterhorn.
