Welsh council sparks fury after 97-year-old given just a fortnight to pay £23,000 care fees
Pembrokeshire council accused a family of deliberately hiding assets

Pembrokeshire council has sparked outrage after demanding 97-year-old Rita Stewart pay £23,000 in care fees within two weeks. The council claimed the family deliberately hid assets after selling Ms Stewart's property in 2022. Her daughter Jane James, 65, said they endured "18 months of hell" during the dispute. The family sold the property for £150,000 and transferred £127,000 to Ms Stewart's account, but the council assessed her as having only £23,000 remaining. The council sent a final demand notice on November 13, 2025, giving them until December 1, 2025, to pay. The family claims they spent the money on care fees, legal costs, and essential living expenses. The case highlights ongoing tensions over social care funding in Wales.
