We know about Jesus as a baby, and as a man. But what kind of child was he?
Ancient Christian texts offer few details about Jesus' childhood, depicting him as both obedient and miraculously powerful.

Ancient sources provide minimal information about Jesus' childhood. The Bible contains only a few verses: Matthew mentions Jesus' family fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod's decree to kill Jewish baby boys under age two, while Luke describes a 12-year-old Jesus astonishing teachers in the Jerusalem Temple. The second-century Infancy Gospel of Thomas, considered legend rather than history, portrays Jesus as a powerful but disobedient child who performs miracles but also curses others to death. Scholars like Joan Taylor find the Egypt flight historically plausible given first-century political upheaval. Robert Myles notes Jesus would have been affected by Roman destruction of nearby Sepphoris in 4 BCE, which created economic pressures and displacement. As a Jewish child in Galilee, Jesus likely lived in a multi-generational home and received basic religious education. Later Christian creeds emphasize Jesus' full humanity, countering superhero depictions.
