Wallaby Rex returns to New Jersey sanctuary after overnight journey

A wallaby named Rex escaped from a petting zoo and animal sanctuary in Williamstown, New Jersey, on December 30, 2025, and was found the next day at a nearby Walmart. The sanctuary staff reported Rex missing after he broke free from their enclosure, prompting a search that lasted nearly 24 hours. Local authorities and animal control responded to the Walmart location where Rex was discovered unharmed but frightened. Staff safely captured the wallaby and returned him to the sanctuary. The incident drew public attention as Rex became an unexpected visitor at the retail store before being reunited with caretakers at the animal facility.
