Vancouver Council Calls on Feds to Cut Blinding LED Headlights
Council urges Transport Canada to set stricter LED headlight standards after safety concerns rise.

On January 27 2026, Vancouver city council unanimously adopted a motion calling on Transport Canada to adopt stricter regulations for LED headlights, which experts say are brighter, smaller, and bluer than older halogen lamps. Councilor Sean Orr, who introduced the motion, noted that high‑mounted, high‑intensity lights on large vehicles are blinding drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Vancouver’s mayor will write a letter urging federal action and the city plans to present the motion at this summer’s Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference. The move follows increasing reports of glare-related accidents, and follows Vision Zero Vancouver’s push for safer streets. The federal government could set a new national standard limiting headlamp intensity and height.
