Ukraine Moldova Blackouts as Power Lines Fail
Power lines failed in Ukraine and Moldova, blackouts amid sub‑zero temperatures and Russian airstrikes.

High‑voltage power lines failed at 10:42 am local time on 31 January 2026, causing a cascading outage across Ukraine’s grid and a connecting line to Moldova. Kyiv, Chisinau, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv and other regions lost electricity, shutting down Kyiv’s metro, water services and Chisinau traffic lights. Temperatures are forecast to fall to –11 °C in Kyiv on Saturday and plunge to –17 °C by Wednesday; Moldova will see –10 °C on Monday. Russia’s airstrikes on energy infrastructure have weakened the grid, though Moscow agreed to halt such strikes until 1 February at U.S. request. Power was partially restored Saturday afternoon after crews stabilised the interconnected networks.
