UK to merge police forces into regional units

On 25 January 2026 Sky News reported that the UK government will overhaul policing by merging the 43 existing local police forces in England and Wales into larger regional constabularies and creating a new FBI‑style National Police Service. The move, championed by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, is aimed at improving resource efficiency, reducing duplication and strengthening the response to serious crime, counter‑terrorism and fraud. Regional centres will handle major offences such as murder, rape and county‑lines drug trafficking, while within them a neighbourhood policing tier will address shoplifting, muggings and anti‑social behaviour. The reforms echo the 2013 Police Scotland merger and have drawn mixed reactions from police associations, who warn of recruitment and procurement challenges.
