UK Schools to be Phone‑Free All Day – Education Sec.
Bridget Phillipson tells UK schools to ban phones all day, citing widespread misuse and new policy enforcement.

On 26 January 2026, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson sent a letter to all English headteachers demanding schools become 'phone‑free environments' for the entire day. She forbids phones as calculators, for research or during lessons, break times and lunch, and urges consistent enforcement backed by parents. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology notes that 99.9 % of primary schools and 90 % of secondary schools have policies, yet 58 % of secondary students and 65 % of key‑stage‑four pupils report phones being used without permission. Teachers are also barred from using phones in front of students. The move ties into broader plans to tighten child‑online‑use, including a consultation on an Australian‑style under‑16 social‑media ban.
