UK Reopens Veteran Recall to Age 65 – Defence Bill 2027

Britain’s new Armed Forces Bill will raise the maximum age at which veterans can be recalled from 55 to 65, taking effect in spring 2027. The legislation, introduced in the House of Commons on 15 January 2026, is designed to enlarge the country’s strategic reserve – a pool of former regulars and wider recall reserves that can be activated in emergencies. Roughly 95,000 ex‑service personnel are currently eligible for recall, but the Ministry of Defence does not publish data on the wider reserve. The measure follows growing concerns over Russia’s aggression and mirrors Ukraine’s use of reserves against Putin’s invasion, while also reflecting NATO’s emphasis on ready reserve forces.
