UK PM & Prince Harry Slam Trump on NATO's Afghan Role
Harry and PM Starmer condemn Trump’s inaccurate claims on NATO’s Afghan role.

On January 23, 2026, Prince Harry and Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly criticised former President Donald Trump for claiming NATO allies were “a little off the front lines” during Afghanistan’s war. The remarks followed Trump’s April 2023 statements in Davos, where he said the United States “never needed” allies after 9/11, despite NATO’s 1998 Article 5 invocation and 3,500 total NATO fatalities – 2,500 U.S. and at least 457 British casualties. Starmer described Trump’s comments as “insulting” and urged respectful recognition of the shared sacrifices, noting that Denmark lost 44 troops and Poland reported 44 fatalities. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers defended Trump, asserting U.S. contributions outweigh other members. The controversy follows Trump’s attempts to acquire Greenland and disputes with NATO over defense spending.
