UK Issues Cold Weather Health Alerts for New Year as Temperatures Drop Below 5C

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold health alert for North East and North West England from 8pm Sunday 28 December 2025 through 5 January 2026, with temperatures expected to drop to 3-5C. A yellow alert covers East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London, where temperatures may fall to 4-6C. The alerts warn of significant health impacts including increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections, particularly for those over 65 and with pre-existing conditions. Sky News meteorologist Dr Christopher England forecast the end of 2025 will be 'not particularly fantastic' with temperatures around 7-8C, but conditions will worsen in 2026 with cold, cloudy weather and overnight frost and fog. Northern areas will face the worst conditions from New Year's Day onwards.
