UK Issues Cold Weather Health Alerts for New Year as Temperatures Drop Below 5C
Amber and yellow cold health alerts issued across UK regions as temperatures forecast to fall to 3-6C

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold health alert for North East and North West England from 8pm Sunday 28 December 2025 through 5 January 2026, with temperatures expected to drop to 3-5C. A yellow alert covers East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London, where temperatures may fall to 4-6C. The alerts warn of significant health impacts including increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections, particularly for those over 65 and with pre-existing conditions. Sky News meteorologist Dr Christopher England forecast the end of 2025 will be 'not particularly fantastic' with temperatures around 7-8C, but conditions will worsen in 2026 with cold, cloudy weather and overnight frost and fog. Northern areas will face the worst conditions from New Year's Day onwards.
