Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to launch a mass eviction programme that will begin in the spring, stripping thousands of asylum seekers in Britain of hotel accommodation and the weekly allowance they have received. The move aims to accelerate the government’s pledge to shut all asylum hotels by 2029 and will target those who can support themselves, have a right to work, break the law, or refuse a removal order. In September, 36,273 people were housed in temporary accommodation, a 13 % rise from June, and the number of hotels has already dropped from 400 to about 200. The first evictions are expected to start in spring, with further closures by April.
