UK Drivers Log Lowest Mileage in Europe Amid Congestion Charges and Tax Hikes
Average British driver covers just 7,900 miles annually, lowest in Europe

UK motorists drove an average of 7,900 miles in 2024, the lowest mileage among European countries, according to analysis by car valuation firm Motorway. The figure represents a significant drop from pre-pandemic levels and reflects the combined impact of rising ownership costs, including increased Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for cars over 40 years old, London's expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charging drivers £12.50 daily, and the city's Congestion Charge of £15 per day. The report, published December 31, 2025, by GB News, attributed the trend to financial pressures with the average UK driver spending £9,900 annually on car ownership. High fuel costs, expensive insurance premiums, and urban driving restrictions in major cities like London have particularly affected mileage in England, contributing to the UK's position at the bottom of the European mileage rankings.
