Uganda Election Declared Fraudulent by Bobi Wine’s Lawyer Amid Violence
Uganda’s ruling party celebrates President Museveni’s landslide win while opposition claims fraud amid violent crackdowns.

On 17 January 2026, Uganda's National Electoral Commission announced President Yoweri Museveni’s landslide re‑election with 71.65 % of the vote, extending his 40‑year rule by five years. The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) celebrated in Kampala, while opposition leader Bobi Wine received 24.72 % of the vote, down from 34.8 % in 2021. Wine’s lawyer, Benjamin Katana, claimed the process was a “fraudulent affair”, walked out of the tally centre, and called for protests. Security forces backed by a military helicopter were deployed; at least seven people were killed in central Uganda amid police crackdowns. Internet was shut down, and crowds gathered to watch Premier League matches instead of election results.
