Ubisoft Closes Halifax Studio, 71 Jobs Cut

Ubisoft announced on Jan 7 2026 that its Halifax, Nova Scotia studio would close, resulting in 71 layoffs. The decision follows a 24‑month cost‑cutting drive and a decline in revenue for Assassin’s Creed Rebellion, released in 2018. In late December 2025, 60 studio employees formed the company’s first North American union, represented by CWA Canada and led by president Carmel Smyth. Ubisoft spokesperson Antoine Leduc‑Labelle said the restructuring began before the unionization process. Senior server developer T.J. Gillis, who worked five years at the studio, described the closure as “awfully suspicious.” The shutdown mirrors Microsoft’s 2024 Alpha Dog studio closure in Halifax, leaving the province with limited game‑development jobs.
