A fatal train collision occurred on December 30, 2025, near the Qoriwayrachina archaeological site in Peru, involving two tourist trains traveling to and from Machu Picchu. The accident resulted in one fatality - railway worker Jhonathan Castillo Gonzalez - and injured approximately 30 passengers. The crash involved a train departing from Machu Picchu and another heading toward the famed Inca archaeological site. Emergency footage showed severely damaged carriages with broken windows and dented sides stuck on tracks between forest and rock walls. Train services between Machu Picchu and Cusco were immediately suspended following the accident. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collision. The incident occurred on the main tourist railway line serving the popular destination, which attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually, most arriving by train.
