Victim, best friend, killed in mistaken identity incident, two men receive life sentences
On 26 November 2023 in Greenock, Inverclyde, 35‑year‑old Michael Beaton was struck in the face by a car driven by his best friend, Richard Mullan, age 21. While Beaton lay injured, Alexander McQuillan, age 27, attacked him with a machete. The High Court in Glasgow found the death a case of mistaken identity, with McQuillan having been the intended target. Both Mullan and McQuillan pleaded guilty to murder and were sentenced to life. Judge Lord Cubie imposed a minimum of 16 years for Mullan and 18 years for McQuillan, citing deliberate and brutal violence. The case highlights the tragic consequences of fatal misunderstandings.
