The company also updated its verification page language to obscure why users receive the blue check, replacing 'verified account' with 'verified account on X' and removing the phrase 'verified account.' This followed Musk's December 2022 announcement that all legacy verified accounts would lose their checkmarks unless they subscribed to Twitter Blue for $8/month. The selective enforcement raised questions about Musk's commitment to consistent policy application across all verified users.
