Trump Threatens Tariffs on NATO Allies for Greenland Deal

President Donald Trump announced on Jan. 17, 2026, that the eight NATO allies who have sent small contingents of troops to Greenland would face a 10 % tariff on all goods shipped to the United States starting Feb. 1, with the rate rising to 25 % on June 1 until the U.S. acquires the territory. The targeted nations – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland – have denounced the threat, with French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemning it as intimidation. Protesters in Nuuk drew almost a third of the city’s residents in solidarity on Jan. 17, while a Quinnipiac poll found 55 % of Americans opposed buying Greenland, 67 % of Republicans supportive. European leaders have called for a united response and congressional delegates warned the tariffs could damage U.S. alliances.
