Trump threatens tariffs on countries selling oil to Cuba, declaring national emergency
Trump orders tariffs on oil‑exporting nations amid Cuba crisis.

On Jan 29, 2026, President Donald Trump announced a new executive order declaring a national‑security emergency over Cuba. The order bars any nation that sells or otherwise supplies oil to the island from providing its goods to the United States without a tariff review by the Departments of Commerce, State, Treasury, Homeland Security and the Trade Representative. Trump warned that “Cuba will not be able to survive” and cited Russia, China, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah as allies of the Cuban regime. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico continues to ship oil to Cuba, prompting Trump’s phone call. The move follows Trump’s January 7‑date statements that Venezuela’s oil revenue no longer reaches Cuba and is part of a broader effort to curb the island’s economy.
