Trump threatens Iran intervention as protests escalate
Donald Trump says US is 'locked and loaded' to rescue Iranian protesters amid deadly cost-of-living demonstrations.

US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Truth Social that if authorities shoot and kill peaceful protesters, 'the United States of America will come to their rescue.' The warning came as Iran faces its largest protests in over three years, with at least seven people killed across the country including Tehran. The demonstrations, now in their sixth day, were sparked by economic hardship following the collapse of the Iranian rial, which now trades at 1.4 million rials per dollar. Protesters have chanted against the theocratic regime while Iran's Supreme National Security Council warned that US interference would destabilize the region. Tensions remain high after Iran's missile attack on US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in June 2025, which was retaliation for US strikes on three nuclear sites during Israel's 12-day war on Iran. The current protests, while significant, have not yet reached the intensity of the 2022 demonstrations following Mahsa Amini's death in police custody.
