Trump Threatens EU Tariffs Over Greenland Deal
Trump warns 8 European nations of 10% tariffs if Greenland not sold.

On Jan 17 2026, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that the United States would impose a 10 % import tax on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting in February. The tariff would rise to 25 % on June 1 unless the U.S. secured the "complete and total purchase of Greenland", a semi‑autonomous Danish territory home to ~57,000 residents. Trump made the threat from his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla., and a bipartisan Congressional delegation later visited Copenhagen to reassure the Danish and Greenlandic governments. The contention has sparked protests in Nuuk and Copenhagen, drawn EU emergency meetings, and raised questions about the legality of applying tariffs to an EU‑single market.
