Trump Threatens 50% Tariff on Canadian Aircraft, Targets Bombardier
U.S. president threatens severe tariff on Canadian planes, sparking industry backlash.

On January 30 2024, President Donald Trump warned that Canada would face a 50% tariff on all aircraft produced in Canada until Canadian regulators certify newer U.S. models, and that Bombardier’s Global Express jets could be decertified. Bombardier’s fleet of 5,200 aircraft, more than half of which fly in the U.S., reports as many as 3,000 U.S. employees and over 10,000 Quebec workers. In 2024, 60% of Canada’s 471 aircraft exports—valued at $6.6 billion—went to the United States. Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the situation could be resolved, while officials like Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet warned the threat undermines economic stability. U.S. officials and the FAA have yet to take firm action, and the situation remains under diplomatic review.
