Trump Not Bluffing – Greenland Crisis Threatens Europe and NATO
Trump's move to seize Greenland sparks a diplomatic showdown with Denmark, the EU and NATO.

On 18 January 2026, Sky News reported that U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding that Greenland become an American territory to counter perceived Russian and Chinese threats. Trump threatened tariffs on eight European nations, including the UK, and hinted at renaming military bases as “Fort Trump.” The Danish government, represented by Foreign Ministers Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Vivian Motzfeldt, has warned that ceding sovereignty would be unacceptable and has said Denmark remains open to dialogue but will not relinquish control. European leaders, the EU and NATO’s Article 5, have expressed concern that Greenland's status remains a strategic asset. The standoff has prompted protests in Copenhagen and raised the question of whether Europe will capitulate to Trump’s demands.
