A train derailment in southern Mexico killed at least 13 people and injured 98 others, with 36 requiring hospital treatment and 5 in critical condition. The accident occurred on Sunday between Chivela and Nizanda in Oaxaca state, on an interoceanic route connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico. The train, part of the Interoceanic Corridor project launched in 2023, had 250 people on board including 241 passengers and 9 crew members. The Mexican Navy deployed 360 personnel, 20 vehicles, 4 ground ambulances, 3 air ambulances, and 1 tactical drone for search and rescue operations. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the casualties, while Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos opened an investigation into the incident. The Interoceanic Corridor project aims to create a strategic trade route across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, covering approximately 180 miles (290km) between the Pacific port of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.
