Tories Claim Govt Retreat Over Chagos Surrender
UK Tories say the government has backed down on the controversial Chagos Islands deal after Donald Trump blasted the £35bn handover of Diego Garcia as ‘stupid’, prompting Parliament to postpone debate.

On 24 January 2026, Tories portrayed the UK government as retreating from the Chagos Islands agreement after former US president Donald Trump called the £35 billion transfer of the Diego Garcia military base ‘great stupidity’ and ‘total weakness’. The Commons defeated the Lords’ amendments on the bill, which would stop payments to Mauritius, call for a referendum and impose a parliamentary veto. The Labour MP Graham Stringer urged a pause, while shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel claimed the deal was a surrender and pledged to fight it. The House of Lords postponed its debate, with a reschedule expected in the coming weeks, amid accusations of “reckless” interference justified by national security claims.
