Tesla Stops Model S & X, Focuses on Robotics
Tesla will stop selling Model S and X to focus on robotics, boosting Optimus production.

On 29 January 2026, Tesla announced it will cease production of its older Model S and Model X electric cars to re‑allocate factory space to the Optimus robot line. The move follows the company’s first ever decline in annual revenue reported for the year ending 2025, while CEO Elon Musk stressed a need to accelerate robotics and AI ambitions. Tesla said investment this year will more than double to $20 billion (£14.5 billion), with $2 billion earmarked for its xAI unit. Shares rose roughly 2 % in after‑hours trading, and Musk hinted a possible SpaceX IPO in June. The shift comes as Chinese rival BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s biggest EV maker and the US faces chip shortages that threaten production.
