Study Reveals Why Young Adults Engage in Unsafe Sex Despite Risks

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Sex Research surveyed 440 young adults aged 18-25 through Amazon's Mechanical Turk and a Canadian university to understand condom negotiation behaviors. Researchers found heterosexual men favored passive strategies (most likely to agree to unprotected sex), heterosexual women preferred assertive approaches like withholding sex, while men who have sex with men (MSM) balanced verbal communication with non-confrontational tactics. The study revealed that relationship motivation and perceived partner compatibility influenced women's willingness to take sexual risks. Lead researcher Shayna Skakoon-Sparling noted that emotional factors like relationship desires and partner familiarity can override risk recognition, explaining why some young people engage in unsafe sex despite awareness of STIs, HIV, cervical cancer, and unplanned pregnancy risks.
