Storm Ingrid Washes Away Teignmouth Grand Pier

On 24 January 2026, Storm Ingrid battered the south‑west coast of England, triggering a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across Devon, Cornwall and parts of Scotland. The gale forced a large section of the historic Teignmouth Grand Pier—built in 1865 and famed for its arcade games—to collapse into the sea. Local councillor Cate Williams said the pier had already been in poor condition, and the private ownership meant no immediate repairs could be ordered. The storm also caused train service suspensions between Exeter St Davids and Newton Abbot and closure of the line from Par to Newquay, while the Met Office warned of flooding in the Grampian, Angus and Perth regions of Scotland. Residents and visitors faced considerable disruption as flood alerts were issued for the surrounding area.
