Starmer Defends Blocking Burnham Bid
PM Sir Keir Starmer stands by Labour’s decision to block Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham from the Gorton and Denton by‑election, citing focus on other key contests.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer defended the Labour Party's decision to bar Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham from contesting the upcoming Gorton and Denton by‑election, arguing that allowing the campaign would divert resources from other crucial contests. The National Executive Committee voted 8‑to‑1 against Burnham’s bid, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood abstaining. Burnham, who served as the city's mayor and has eyed a return to Westminster, said he would “get on with my job” after the decision. Starmer said the focus must remain on local council elections in England, and key elections in Wales and Scotland, as the government battles the cost of living. The move could prevent a potential leadership challenge to Starmer on the Commons floor.
