Scotland Moves to Nationalise Ardrossan Harbour After Ferry Fiasco Delays

Scotland's First Minister John Swinney announced that discussions to nationalise Ardrossan Harbour are at a 'well-advanced stage' as of January 2026. Reports indicate a purchase price was agreed upon in October 2025 with current owner Peel Ports, with hopes to complete the deal by year-end. The harbour requires urgent upgrades to accommodate two new ferries - the Glen Sannox (in service since January 2025) and Glen Rosa (now delayed until early 2027). Ardrossan Harbour's jetty is too small for the vessels, forcing Glen Sannox to operate from nearby Troon. The harbour's closure has severely impacted the Ayrshire coastal town and Arran connectivity. The Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox vessels, originally contracted for £97m in 2015, have ballooned to an estimated £460m due to massive delays.
