The FBI reported that scammers stole $333.5 million from Americans through Bitcoin ATM scams in 2025, a significant increase from $250 million in 2024 and a dramatic rise from previous years. With over 45,000 Bitcoin ATMs nationwide, criminals are exploiting the ease and irreversibility of cryptocurrency transactions. The Washington, D.C. Attorney General's Office sued Athena Bitcoin in September 2025, alleging 93% of its transactions were fraudulent and that the median victim age was 71. AARP has advocated for stricter regulations, including daily deposit caps, as at least 17 states have passed legislation to regulate the machines amid growing concerns.
