Rwanda Sues UK for £50m Over Deportation Scheme
East African country sues UK for £50m after scrapping asylum deportation deal.

On 27 January 2026 Rwanda filed a complaint at the Hague‑based Permanent Court of Arbitration, seeking £50 million in damages from the United Kingdom for not formally ending the controversial asylum partnership. The scheme, unveiled in 2019 and scrubbed in early 2025, had intended to transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing. Downing Street described the scheme as a “complete disaster” that squandered £700 million of taxpayers’ money and returned only four volunteers. Between the deal’s signing and its scrap, 84 000 people crossed the English Channel. The arbitration, opened in November 2025 under the 2019 agreement, challenges the UK’s legal and financial responsibilities.
