Russia Strikes Leave 1,000 Kyiv Blocks Without Heat

On 10‑11 January 2026, Russian forces launched a dawn‑time attack on Ukraine’s power grid, disabling heating and electricity in more than 1,000 apartment blocks across Kyiv. The strike, which followed a week of relentless bombardment that saw 1,100 drones, over 890 guided bombs and 50 missiles fired into the capital, left the city in a near‑total power blackout during a severe cold snap. President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of timing the assault to exploit freezing temperatures, describing it as “cynical terror.” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported ongoing restoration work, but warned that frosts of –12 °C to –20 °C would persist. In retaliation, the Ukrainian army struck three Lukoil drilling platforms—V. Filanovsky, Yuri Korchagin and Valery Grayfer—in the Caspian Sea.
