Rohingya Genocide Case Begins at ICJ
Rohingya voices finally heard in The Hague as Myanmar accused of genocide.

On 24 January 2026 the International Court of Justice in The Hague began hearings on the Rohingya genocide case, marking the first time survivors’ testimonies are heard in a global court. The case was filed by Gambia, led by Justice Minister Dawda Jallow, who cites Myanmar’s 2017 “clearance operations” that displaced over 700,000 Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh. Myanmar’s defense, represented by Ko Ko Hlaing, argues the actions were counter‑terrorism, not genocide, and demands rigorous proof. Dr Ronan Lee’s research shows Facebook amplified anti‑Rohingya hate speech, aiding Myanmar forces. The ICJ will assess evidence over three weeks, with a final ruling expected at the end of 2026.
