Riz Ahmed’s Modern Hamlet Seeks School Adoption
Riz Ahmed wants his 13‑year‑old, modern Hamlet to replace old-school versions in schools.

Oscar‑winning actor Riz Ahmed has finished a new, action‑thriller take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, reimagining the story in modern London with a visceral, first‑person camera style. Ahmed says it took 13 years of work and changing studio executives to bring the film to the screen, and he hopes it will become the standard version shown in schools rather than the old‑school adaptations teachers usually use. Born in 1988, the actor became obsessed with Hamlet as a teenager after an encouraging English teacher. In 2022 Ahmed and director Aneil Karia won an Oscar for their short film The Long Goodbye. The feature opens in UK cinemas on 6 February 2026, offering a fresh narrative about fatherhood and societal unfairness.
