Grand Forks couple lost home in September, then motel unit in December fire

Ritchie and Rene Day, a retired couple from Grand Forks, B.C., survived two devastating fires in 2025. On September 30, their dream home on a main street in Grand Forks burned to the ground after a fire started on the deck, killing their four pet birds. They escaped with only clothes and Rene's cellphone, treated for smoke inhalation at hospital. Four months later on December 21, the Johnny's Motel unit where they were living was damaged when a guest's vehicle filled with Christmas presents ignited in the parking garage, spreading to the roof. Fire Chief Morgan Strohmann confirmed half the motel remains operational while five units were deemed unsafe. The couple is rebuilding for the second time in 2026.
