Retail sector administrations soar by a fifth as Rachel Reeves's business tax raid shuts down high street
UK retail administrations rose 22% in 2025, as high business rates and economic pressures hit high street stores.

The number of British retailers entering administration surged by 22% in the 12 months to November 2025, with 1,132 firms going under, according to data from the Insolvency Service. This rise was driven by increased business rates and economic pressures, with the retail sector accounting for 13% of all administrations. Business rates rose by £10.5 billion in 2025, hitting high street stores like WHSmith and Greggs. The British Retail Consortium warned that the sector faces a 'very difficult year' in 2026 and urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves to ease taxes and prioritize investment in infrastructure and skills to support economic growth.
