Repeat offenders fuel spike in Edmonton transit violence
22% of offenders cause half of Edmonton transit attacks, 260% assault rise since 2015.

An in‑depth CBC visual investigation reveals that 22 % of attackers on Edmonton’s light‑rail system are responsible for nearly one‑half of all transit assaults. Statistics Canada data shows the violent‑crime rate on transit more than doubled between 2015 and 2024, with physical assaults spiking 260 %. The 2023 Coliseum LRT station recorded 289 incidents from 2018‑2024—over 40 % higher than any other location. About 44 % of reported attacks result in charges, while nearly 90 % of the roughly 1,000 riders banned from the system have committed violent offences. Police patrols in December 2025 arrested three repeat offenders in 20 minutes, underscoring the concentrated threat.
