Reimagining Leadership As A Spiritual Journey: An Interview With Truls Åkerlund
Norwegian theologian Prof Truls Åkerlund advocates for humility, reflexivity and relationship in Pentecostal leadership.

At the Europe-Asia Pentecostal Summit in May 2025, Norwegian theologian and church planter Prof Truls Åkerlund delivered a paper titled 'Perspectives on Pentecostal Leadership: Contextuality, Complexity, and Constructiveness.' In an interview with City News, he argued that church leadership should be co-constructed through humility, reflexivity and relationship rather than command and control. Drawing on the GLOBE study, he highlighted cultural differences between individualistic Norway and collectivistic Singapore, stressing that leaders must maintain critical distance from culture while grounding decisions in spirituality. He suggested five practices: reflective practice, humility, servant leadership, space for feedback, and psychological safety. Åkerlund holds a PhD in leadership and theology from the University of Agder and planted a church in Oslo.
