Reeves: UK Steady Against Trump Tariffs

On 21 January 2026, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves told Sky News in Davos that Britain will not be "buffeted around" by new US tariffs that Donald Trump is threatening to impose. Reeves highlighted the £1.5 bn of inward investment secured at the World Economic Forum, said a trade and cooperation agreement signed with the US in 2025 proves the UK can broker deals even under a Trump administration, and reiterated that no tariffs had yet been imposed. She defended the government's inflation strategy, noting December CPI rose to 3.4 % and the Bank of England expects a return to the 2 % target by late spring, citing energy bill cuts of £150, rail fare freezes and free prescriptions. The prime minister Keir Starmer remains in charge of the UK’s Davos agenda.
