Record 45% of Americans Identify as Independents
Gallup poll finds a record 45% of U.S. adults call themselves independents.

A Gallup survey of 15,000 U.S. adults conducted in 2025 found an unprecedented 45% of respondents identify as political independents, up from 27% each for Democrats and Republicans. 20% leaned Democratic, 15% Republican, and 10% had no party preference. The trend is strongest among Millennials and Gen X, with Gen Z adults at 56% independent versus 47% in 2012. Polling officer Chad Peace noted that gerrymandered districts and partisan primaries push voters away. Political scientist Jared McDonald warned that the rise of independents may concentrate power in more extreme parties, deepening polarization.
