Recognising The Spirit’s Call In The Visions Of The Young: An Interview With Dr Joy Qualls
Dr Joy Qualls calls for church to empower youth as active pneumatological agents, not just future leaders.

In a November 11, 2025 interview with City News, Dr. Joy Qualls, Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Biola University and Associate Dean in the Division of Communication, discussed her co-authored paper 'Youth as Pneumatological Agents: Toward a Pentecostal Theology of Youth' with Dr. Wayne Choong of City Harvest Church. Qualls argues that churches often overgeneralize youth by age, treating them as a ministry category rather than Spirit-empowered agents today. She emphasizes integrating youth into church service early, creating relational discipleship, and teaching media literacy to help them discern truth in digital spaces. Qualls stresses that revival is marked by repentance, not just emotional experiences, and urges elders to open doors for youth rather than control outcomes. The interview was part of the Asia Pentecostal Summit 2025 coverage, highlighting the need for a theology that sees youths as ministers now.
