'Real possibility' May elections could lead to break up of UK, says Wales' First Minister Eluned Morgan

Welsh First Minister Baroness Eluned Morgan told Sky News that the 7 May local elections could set the United Kingdom on a path to breakup, warning that nationalist parties in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales could take control of devolved parliaments. Morgan, leader of Welsh Labour, said a strong result for the Scottish National Party, along with the Reform and Plaid Cymru parties in Wales, could push Labour into third place and potentially lose Senedd control for the first time. She added the outcome would pressure Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, whose Labour party faces a critical challenge ahead of the election. Scotland’s first minister John Swinney echoed the concern, saying a SNP majority would be a green light for a second independence referendum.
