Reading Council to Double Parking Charges on Feb 2
Reading Council to double parking charges for petrol & diesel vehicles from Feb 2, 2026.

Reading Borough Council announced on 23 January 2026 that it will introduce an emission‑based parking scheme on Monday, 2 February 2026, which will double the daily charge on on‑street spaces for petrol and diesel vehicles. The new policy, aimed at reducing air pollution in the borough’s central area, will impose a £10 daily rate for non‑zero‑emission vehicles versus £20 for petrol and diesel cars. Drivers across Reading have already expressed concerns, citing significant cost increases for commuters and residents. The council’s decision follows a failed local consultation where 70% of respondents opposed the higher charges. Implementation will begin on 2 February under the council’s green‑transport strategy.
